This past weekend, July 29-August 1, 2016, CASA of San Mateo County's Senior Program Manager, Vanessa Merino, was invited to the Summer Leadership and Policy Conference held at University of Southern California. Vanessa attended the conference as an Adult Supporter along with two Members representing the San Mateo County chapter. Thank you Vanessa Merino for being the face of CASA of San Mateo County and for representing our county. We appreciate all the work you do for CASA and San Mateo County's foster youth.
California Youth Connection (CYC) is a youth led organization that develops leaders who empower each other and their communities to transform the foster care system through legislative and policy change. A huge, heartfelt thank you to our youth representatives working together to change and strengthen foster care policies as you are all advocates yourselves giving a voice to other foster children being left unheard. You are all true hero's.
The Summer Leadership and Policy Conference Vanessa attended was a four day event and it was one of two conferences held a year. At this conference, foster youth come together and discuss and identify the most pressing issues still affecting foster children in California. Policy topics discussed this past weekend were issues such as: social work accountability, mental health, extended foster care (AB 12), and foster care accountability. The California youth connect with one another and brainstorm solutions and recommendations to create a policy agenda for the following year. The CYC then work together at that conference to present their solution and recommendation for foster care policy change resulting in a CYC Sponsored Bill.
The California Youth Connection continue to change, strengthen, and create solutions to the foster youth system and policies, the CYC are advocating for all foster children throughout California and this is really commendable. CASA of San Mateo County thanks you.
